Unique City apartment in Grade II listed building for sale on Olympic Marathon Route

Filed under: Latest News — Tags: — David Taylor @ 11:23 am

The Long Lane office of Frank Harris and Company estate agents have an elegant and beautifully proportioned three-bedroom duplex apartment in one of the City’s oldest and architecturally most interesting buildings.

The property is located in Great Tower Street, at the heart of the City of London, an area steeped in history. Writes Group Director Tina Evans: “Samuel Pepys observed the Great Fire of London from what was then called Tower Street.

“He refers in his diary to observing “the saddest sight of destruction that I ever saw” from the steeple of All Hallows Church. In fact, the tower of All Hallows is the only recognisable structure remaining in the street from that time.

“In the 17th Century, Great Tower Street was the home of Mr Lloyd’s original coffee shop. It was customary for ship’s captains and owners to meet there to get the latest shipping news. This was the start of Lloyds of London.”

Built in the architectural style of the 17th Century, this Grade ll listed red brick and Portland dressed stone building is a reminder of how the street would have looked when it consisted of fine residential properties.

Tina adds: “Great Tower Street is still making history today. In 2012, the road will form part of the Olympic Marathon route. Just minutes away from The Thames and close to some of London’s most famous landmarks including the Tower of London and Tower Bridge close by, this is an opportunity to enjoy City living at its finest.”

The property is on the market at £950,000. Click here for more information or contact Tina via tinaevans@frankharris.co.uk or call 020 7600 7000.

Writes Andrew Sorene from Central London estate agents Frank Harris and Company:

“I know that finding a decent property in London can be a bit of a nightmare – whether you are staying for just one night, renting or buying. But you can actually relive a nightmare as the infamous prison Alcatraz will be coming to King’s Cross.

“Reading today’s Telegraph, guests will be able to sample the delights of the prison in a temporary hotel which has been set up to coincide with a new TV programme. It will be open to the public from March 13-17 and stays are free of charge, but space is limited!

“Of course if you prefer something a little more comfortable, pop in to our office in Marchmont Street (a little more luxurious than a prison!) and we’ll be happy to advise you about the property available in the area.”

Video showing how King’s Cross has changed since the 1960s

Filed under: Latest News — David Taylor @ 11:25 am

Writes Andrew Sorene from estate agents Frank Harris and Company:

“We’ve unearthed some interesting footage of the area around King’s Cross back at the beginning of the 1960s. It shows the streets around the station, along with the long-gone engine sheds which represented the long-gone age of steam.

“Since then, the area has changed beyond all recognition with a large number of new developments taking place. And of course, the old train sheds have been replaced by their 21st Century equivalent – Eurostar, housed in the rejuvenated St. Pancras Station.

“We’re excited about the changes to King’s Cross and we’re always happy to talk to people about what effect this will have on buying, renting or letting out property. So give us a call on 020 7387 0077 or drop by our office in Marchmont Street for a chat.”

Southwark link to Harvard University

Filed under: Latest News — Tags: — David Taylor @ 11:24 am

Writes Tony George from South Bank lettings Agent Frank Harris and Company:

“Did you know that nearly 400 years ago, a local Southwark boy called John Harvard was born. In 1637 he emigrated to Charleston, New England, taking with him a sizeable collection of some books and manuscripts.

“Just a year later he succumbed to tuberculosis, and left his prized collection of books to the newly founded local college. In doing so he became the colleges first benefactor, and today over four centuries later, Harvard University still bears his name.

“The whole area around this part of London SE1 has such a rich and varied history that there are dozens of stories like this. If you’re thinking about buying or letting here, why not drop into our Stamford Street office and we’d be happy to talk about Southwark’s heritage.”

Frank Harris and Company – knowledge of buildings large and small in Bloomsbury

Filed under: Latest News — Tags: — David Taylor @ 11:32 am

Writes Alec Papasavva from estate agents Frank Harris and Company.

“It is a little known fact that not all listed buildings/structures are grand or opulent. A prime example is one of the telephone kiosks in Brunswick Square, Bloomsbury.

“Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1927, this cast-iron, ‘K2-type’ kiosk has a domed roof, perforated crowns to the top panel plus glazing bars to windows and door.

“While it is unlikely you’ll have a property as small as a phone box to rent out or sell, we do know the area and can help you maximise your property asset. Or at the very least, we can tell you where to make a call if you’ve mislaid your mobile!”
